FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- Emotional statements were read in a Fresno courtroom on Friday.
Nathanial Casteneda's eldest daughter, Angelica, was shaky as she stood before her father's killer.
Shackled in a red jumpsuit, his left eye closed shut as Montray Skinner heard his fate.
Skinner admitted to using a firearm and plead no contest.
He was sentenced to 22 years in prison for the shooting death of Nathaniel back in 2023 in central Fresno.
"You have a serious criminal history reflecting years of dangerous, criminal activity, and a complete lack of regard," the judge said. "A lengthy prison sentence is appropriate in this case."
Skinner opened fire at a group of people after an argument at a Mini Mart on May 11, 2023, on Fresno Street just north of Belmont Avenue.
Castenada was shot four times and later died at the hospital. Skinner was also shot in the eye during the altercation.
Last year, Action News was in the courtroom when a female witness took the stand.
"He threatened to shoot us all and I was scared," the witness said.
"The actions of you were incredibly dangerous, and the fact that more people were not injured is shocking," the judge said.
Skinner wiped a tear as Castaneda's family spoke directly to him.
"So many lives destroyed, so many lives changed now," said Nathaniel's sister-in-law. "I hope you never see the streets and you rot in that jumpsuit."
Together, wearing shirts with his face on them, Castaneda's family stood united, though not entirely pleased with the outcome.
"It's not exactly what we wanted, but it's finally something that we've been wanting," Angelica said. "We're going to take what we can get for now. Once I got up there and saw his face, I finally felt the piece that I really wanted. I felt like it was genuine and wholehearted, and peace I needed to be at with this whole thing."
