John DiMaggio, Billy West and more 'Futurama' stars dish about XXXL-sized specials

SAN DIEGO -- Some BIG news for "Futurama" fans was announced at San Diego Comic-Con.

Not only is the Matt Groening-created series returning for Season 14 on Aug. 3, Hulu has also greenlit three extended-length, or "XXXL-sized" specials.

On The Red Carpet caught up with the cast and crew at an interactive "Futurama" experience, where they shared their thoughts on the activation and what they know about the new episodes, which are currently in production.

"We're grateful. If somebody told us, you know, 20 years ago that we'd be out here co-mingling with fans, I would've never believed it," Billy West ("Fry") told us.

"It's all come to life. It's just pretty- It's pretty wild," John DiMaggio ("Bender") reiterated.

At the event, fans could visit a real-life Planet Espresso, where they were treated to coffee and donuts, along with some intergalactic swag.

Lee Supercinski, a producer, gave us the details on what's to come for future episodes. "So, what's coming out August 3 is Season 14, and then now beyond that, we announced today that we're going to be doing three extended length specials."

This announcement came last Saturday during the "Futurama" panel, where executive producer and head writer David X. Cohen explained, "We are going to be making, instead of a season of short episodes, a season of extra-long specials."

The first of the specials is "Xmas themed," reads the press release. Supercinski expects it to drop "probably November, December 2027."

"We're so excited to have that pick up," Lauren Tom ("Amy") said, adding, "They're Christmas-themed and Kwanzaa and any kind of holiday you can think of, all stuffed into one."

"One- One is. The first one is!" David Herman ("Scruffy") clarified.

Principal recording on the second of the specials has begun. Maurice LaMarche ("Kif") told us "I've heard through the grapevine it's got a lot of Kif in it. So, oh my!"

"It's wonderful to do even more 'Futurama.' Yay!" said DiMaggio.

The synopsis for Season 14 of "Futurama" reads, "a non-stop onslaught of swaggering space pirates, lab-grown meats, sexy scams... plus the shocking return of Dr. Zoidberg's lost love! You didn't see that coming, prior to being told about it just now!"

Starring alongside DiMaggio, West, Tom, Herman and LaMarche are Katey Sagal, Tress MacNeille and Phil Lamarr.

Season 14 of "Futurama" premieres Monday, Aug. 3 with two new episodes on Hulu and Hulu on Disney+. New episodes will stream Mondays.
