Some residents in Madera County ordered to evacuate due to wildfire

MADERA COUNTY, Calif. (KFSN) -- Some residents in Madera County were forced to evacuate their homes on Monday as a wildfire raging near North Fork spread quickly.

According to CAL FIRE, the wildfire they named the 'Smalley Fire', started on Road 222 and Tunoi Place, which is six miles south of North Fork.

Within a few hours, it charred 40 acres and threatened lives and property, forcing authorities to issue mandatory evacuation orders.

Around 70 residents who lived in the following areas had to flee the flames:

  • All homes within a half-mile of 28445 Road 222
  • All homes on Corrine Lake Road
  • All homes on Box Canyon Road in North Fork or within one half mile of Box Canyon Road
  • As of 11:30 pm, the wildfire is 0% contained.

Firefighters are having trouble battling the flames because of the steep terrain. Video showed an aircraft flying over the area, dropping fire retardant.
