FRESNO COUNTY, Calif. (KFSN) -- An ammonia leak at a Fresno County winery has forced Monroe Elementary School to cancel classes.

The Fresno County Fire Department is on scene at the Vie-Del Company Winery, located on South Chestnut and East Nebraska avenues.

Calls came in for the initial leak just before 9:30 a.m. Monday. Fire crews say the valve that caused the leak has been shut off and are now waiting for the residual ammonia to dissipate.

Students at Monroe Elementary, which is across the street from the winery, have been sheltering in place since the leak.

School officials say parents can pick up their children from the north side of the elementary school.

Fifty employees at the winery were also evacuated and are waiting to see if they will be able to go back into work.
