FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- An interactive robotic dog named Ben Ben is bringing joy to people across Central California while also helping them build social and emotional connections.

Ben Ben acts like a household pet, such as going on walks, playing games and performing tricks.

But the robotic dog is also designed to encourage interaction and engagement. Robo Enrichment says the technology is being used to help people connect with others in new ways.

"We do social recreational engagement, utilizing a robot dog. It's the first time it's ever been done, and it started right here in the Central Valley," said Carmen Maroney, chief operating officer of Robo Enrichment. "The thing that makes it unique is that it is an interface of robotics with humans."

The robotic dog can run, play and respond to people, often prompting smiles and laughter during interactions.

"He runs around with them. He plays games. You see smiles and laughter," said Paul Gonzales, Robo Enrichment's Chief Executive Officer.

For Crystal Faith Isch, who lives in Clovis, Ben Ben feels much like having a real pet.

"We get to have fun, play games and everything else and love him," she said.

Ben Ben is part of Robo Enrichment's fleet of robotic dogs. The company also operates another robotic dog named Parker, which performs the same role. The dogs can function independently or be controlled by a person, depending on the setting.

Robo Enrichment works with different age groups and programs throughout Central California and says it has seen the positive impact the robotic dogs can have on participants.

"We're really helping to bring people out of their shells. It's the application of STEM. It's part of the STEM program. We call it stimulate your mind, stimulate your mind with activities," Maroney said.

The company says the robotic dogs are especially helpful for people dealing with loneliness and social anxiety.

"Even though they know it's a robot, it's like a stuffed animal. A lot of people right now are using stuffed animals. A stuffed animal isn't real, but they treat it as real," Gonzales said.

As the program continues to grow, Robo Enrichment plans to add more innovative technology.
