Watching Your Wallet: Tips from AARP on saving at the pump
FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- As part of AARP's 99 Great Ways to Save Money and Beyond, Executive Editor Stephen Perrine suggests simple tips to spend less when driving.
"If you have a roof rack or some kind of other additional luggage carrier, go ahead and take that off," he said. "You'd be surprised how much drag that can cause. It can up your fuel cost by 25 percent. That's hundreds and hundreds of dollars a year."
During the warmer months, stick to your car's climate control.
"When you're driving down the road in hot weather, keep those windows rolled up and use the AC," Perrine said. "The drag from the windows being down costs more than it does to run the AC."
If you're the kind of person that drives until the gas tank is on empty, you might want to rethink that strategy.
"Not only is it stressful, but gas stations along the highway can charge up to 40 cents per gallon more than those that are just a mile or two away," Perrine said. "Take your time and fuel up before you absolutely need to save a lot of money."
You can even use artificial intelligence to find the cheapest gas.
"It varies from town to town state to state, but AI can do an analysis of your town and tell you where exactly to go," Perrine said.
