INGLEWOOD, Calif. -- The Las Vegas Raiders faced a final opportunity in a season opener for a come-behind-victory against the Los Angeles Chargers at SoFi Stadium.

Fitting that it was former Raiders first-round pick Khalil Mack who ended the threat, as the Chargers edge rusher strip-sacked quarterback Derek Carr on fourth-and-8 following the two-minute warning to ensure a 24-19 victory.

In his Chargers debut and his first game since undergoing season-ending foot surgery after Week 7 with the Chicago Bears last October, Mack was a force.

He finished with three sacks, six tackles, three tackles for a loss, four quarterback hits and a forced fumble.

"Understanding what last year was, last year getting cut short, not being able to be myself from the start of the season to the sixth game of the season, I was looking forward to this game," Mack said. "I think you all could tell a little bit, maybe."

Mack became the seventh player in NFL history to record three-plus sacks in his debut with a team since individual sacks were first tracked in 1982, according to the Elias Sports Bureau, and the first player to accomplish the feat since Calais Campbell with the Jaguars in 2017.

"He is amazing," Chargers safetyDerwin Jamessaid about Mack. "He is different for sure."

The Chargers completed a blockbuster trade over the offseason to acquire Mack, sending a 2022 second-rounder and 2023 sixth-round pick to the Bears in exchange for the All-Pro.

Since his arrival, Chargers coach Brandon Staley has insisted that Mack would not only improve the Bolts' defense, which ranked among the NFL's worst in several categories last season, but also their competitive culture.

When asked after the game if Mack displayed anything "extra" in his debut against his former team and following an injury, Staley quickly responded.

"No. There's nothing extra with Khalil Mack," said Staley, Mack's position coach with the Bears in 2018. "Khalil Mack is that way all the time. This is just your first time seeing it."

Mack collected a game ball from Staley for his effort, a catalyst in a stout team effort.

The Bolts allowed only 64 rushing yards, had six sacks and intercepted three passes, despite playing without cornerback J.C. Jackson, the NFL's interceptions leader since 2018, who was inactive as he continued to recover from last month's ankle surgery.

"It's team ball, it's all team ball," Mack said. "The coverage guys was doing an excellent job, they did a lot. It's been a while since I got cover sacks. They were balling. They did their thing."

The Chargers' three interceptions -- by linebacker Drue Tranquill, cornerback Asante Samuel Jr. and cornerbackBryce Callahan-- marked the first time since 1966 that the team had three different players pick off a pass in Week 1.

"It was tremendous," Samuel said of playing behind the pass-rushing duo of Mack and Joey Bosa, who also recorded 1.5 sacks and forced a fumble.

The Chargers must now turn around on a short week to play another division matchup against quarterback Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs, who are coming off a Week 1 win over the Arizona Cardinals, on "Thursday Night Football."
