The Baltimore Orioles selected shortstop Richie Martin with the No. 1 pick in Thursday's Rule 5 draft.

Fourteen players were selected overall in the major league phase of the draft with only the San Francisco Giants picking more than one player as they made two selections.

Ten of the 14 selections were pitchers.

Martin, 23, hit .300 with six home runs and 42 RBIs in 118 games for Double-A Midland in the Oakland Athletics' system last season.

The Houston Astros, Toronto Blue Jays and Los Angeles Dodgers each had two players plucked from their minor league systems.

Teams selecting a player in the Rule 5 draft must pay $100,000 to the player's former team. The selecting team must keep the player on their 25-man roster for the entire season with the player being active for a minimum of 90 days. If the team does not keep the player on the major league roster they must place him on waivers and if he clears he must be offered back to his original team for $50,000.
