Since May 1, the CDC has received more than 1,600 confirmed domestic cyclosporiasis case reports, and is waiting to confirm more than 5,100 additional cases.
The infection is causing what's called "Mycoplasma pneumonia." The rate of cases at emergency rooms had been increasing over the past six months with the peak hitting in August.
As of Aug. 21, at least 19 people who attended or worked at the "Lightning in a Bottle" festival in Kern County in late May tested positive for Valley fever, according to the California Department of Public Health.
The case was flagged Friday from preliminary test results, and the potential source of the infection is still under investigation, officials said.
