FRESNO COUNTY, Calif. (KFSN) -- Fresno County public health officials have confirmed a suspected scabies outbreak at a school in the Fowler Unified School District, affecting five individuals.
The Fresno County Department of Public Health and Fowler Unified School District said the cases were confirmed in April at a Fowler school.
According to the CDC, scabies is an infestation of the skin by a human itch mite. The condition can cause intense itching and a pimple-like skin rash.
Health officials said the department worked with the school to identify anyone with symptoms, coordinate care and clean the impacted campus.
Officials said no cases have been reported outside of the affected school site and that the risk to the general public remains low.
