A new city ordinance in Tulare aims to tighten restrictions on synthetic marijuana.

TULARE, Calif. (KFSN) -- A new city ordinance in Tulare aims to tighten restrictions on synthetic marijuana.

Until now, the drugs labeled as bath salts and spice have been for sale legally in the city of Tulare because of loopholes in existing drug laws. They're often sold at smoke shops.

Starting Thursday, November 20, 2014, a new city ordinance bans anyone or any business from selling the drugs. The police department put together the ordinance. The department says the drugs are becoming a big problem in the city.

Sgt. Andy Garcia with the Tulare Police Department said, "It is our goal to eliminate the sale, the possession and distribution within our city."

Police say the drug makers are targeting kids in particular. The police plan to propose an amendment to the new ordinance if the creators find loopholes in this new one.
