17-year-old shot after fight breaks out at Southeast Fresno playground

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- A 17-year-old was shot in the lower portion of his body at Holmes Playground in Southeast Fresno on Monday night. Police say it all started a little bit after 8:30 p.m. when they were dispatched to the area for a large fight between 15 to 20 juveniles. While they were responding to the call, the city's ShotSpotter system detected four gunshots in the area near the Holmes Playground on First Avenue between Platt and Huntington.

After arriving, they say the crowd had taken off and no one out there was giving information on what happened.

"About five to eight minutes later, a victim of the shooting showed up at the hospital," Lt. Carl McKnight said. "He relayed that it happened back at the tennis court near Holmes Playground and four shell casings were found.

Authorities say the 17-year-old shooting victim was driven about a mile down the road by friends to Community Regional Medical Center.

Police are not sure if it is gang-related and are still looking for suspects. They hope surveillance cameras on a recreation building will paint a clear picture of what happened and who was involved.

The victim is expected to be okay.
