FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- Across the country, school districts are working to get kids ready for school before they even start kindergarten.

Here at home, Fresno Unified is spending more than $7 million to provide more programs for preschool-aged children.

It's a big day for these preschoolers at Webster Elementary School. They graduated from their first year in Fresno Unified's pre-K program.

"He's learned his colors, his ABCs, he's learned how to interact with other children. I remember the first time I brought him, he was completely shy. He didn't want to play with any other kids, but now he's open to everything," said Angelica Hernandez, a parent.

Fresno Unified officials say they are focusing on early education across the district with more programs for kids at a young age.

"Preschool is so important in preparing students for kindergarten, so it's a kindergarten readiness program," said Tiffany Hill with FUSD Early Learning Programs. "We know that the more ready they are for kindergarten it's our larger goal of every student reading on grade level by the third grade."

Hill says by educating kids earlier, they can help close the achievement gap. She urged parents to start signing their kids up now so they can secure a spot next fall.

At 4 and 5 years old, these kids are already focused on the future and graduating in 2027.

"You can tell that he's learning all these new things and it's expanding his mind and opening everything up, all the incredible possibilities that he has to look forward to in life," said Hernandez.

Lessons that will help them succeed in life.

Kids who are 4 years old by Sept. 1 can be in the program. District officials say families of all income levels can apply and they stress income is not a determining factor.

On Saturday, June 7, Fresno Unified will host sign-ups at three schools: Sunnyside, Gaston and Duncan from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
