Hundreds of Fresno State freshmen scramble on move-in day

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- It's a big day for Fresno State freshmen as Friday marks the official move-in day into the college dorm rooms.

Friday is the start of a busy weekend at Fresno State, and over 800 students are moving into the residence halls - a fast-moving scene with future students loading up shopping carts of belongings with their loved ones on their way to begin a new journey.

"A little emotional, I don't really know how to feel yet," freshman Flor Tabares said. "I'll probably cry once they actually leave."

Tabares is an incoming freshman. She was first in line for check-in with her mom and sister, who both say they're having a hard time parting with her.

"I remember when she got that letter she was like, 'Hey mom, I got in, I was accepted.' I was like, 'Okay put it away, you're not going to Fresno, no,'" her mom Flor Villafuerte said.

Tabares wanted to attend Fresno State to study animal science, and it's her first time moving away from home in Riverside.

"We all stayed around the area just because we fell in love with the colleges," Yari said. "There then she fell in love with this school and I was like Fresno?"

It's an exciting but emotional time for their family, and her mom says she is still adjusting to having her youngest child be the first to leave.

"I'm very nervous," Flor said. "I'm very emotional, I don't want to cry right now."

Although Tabares' family says they don't want to leave the baby of their family, they're looking forward to her future as the first sibling to get the full college experience.

"It's scary, it's really scary, but she's going to be fine," Yari said.

The university is putting on a welcome barbeque Friday night and holding a residence hall welcome dance.
