FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- One man is dead after being hit by a car in Central Fresno. It happened around 6:00 p.m. Wednesday near Golden State and McKinley.

Investigators said the man was crossing the street and had reached the median when he decided to go back and was hit by a car. The man was treated at the scene but he later died.

Officers said the driver of the car is cooperating with them and at this time investigators don't believe he is at fault. "There're traffic signals to the south and north of us, and there are better safer areas that the pedestrian could have crossed the street. It is a darkened area and it's a good possibility the driver didn't see him cross the street," said Dave Ramos, Fresno Police Department.

Police said the victim is in his 40's but they have yet to identify him.
