A man is dead Monday after drowning in eastern Fresno County.

Deputies say the 26-year-old was swimming in a canal near McKinley and Viau Avenues with two younger relatives around 5:45 p.m. when it appears a whirlpool caught him and dragged him underwater.

Deputies say the relatives had to run about a half mile to get help.

When authorities arrived, the man was still under water.

They were able to pull him out and started doing CPR.
