Man dead after being swept away in Sanger canal
Deputies say the 26-year-old was swimming in a canal near McKinley and Viau Avenues with two younger relatives around 5:45 p.m. when a whirlpool caught him and dragged him underwater.

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- A man is dead Monday after drowning in eastern Fresno County.

Deputies say the 26-year-old was swimming in a canal near McKinley and Viau Avenues with two younger relatives around 5:45 p.m. when it appears a whirlpool caught him and dragged him underwater.

Deputies say the relatives had to run about a half mile to get help.

When authorities arrived, the man was still under water.

They were able to pull him out and started doing CPR.

He was taken to Community Regional Medical Center where he later died.
