FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- In Fresno, extra patrols will be on duty, keeping kids safe. Police officers will now be assigned to each middle school campus in Fresno Unified. The goal is to help improve security and promote a safe and positive learning environment.
Fresno Unified is offering free breakfast and lunch to all students at no charge. The practice supports the district's efforts to eliminate all barriers to student learning, and helps ensure students are not hungry at school while they are trying to learn. The program is part of the community eligibility provision (CEP), an option available to schools under the national school lunch program and school breakfast program. The community eligibility provision allows high-poverty schools to expand access to free school meals while reducing paperwork and streamlining meal service operation. Meal applications are no longer required.
"This program helps us eliminate a barrier to academic success - hunger," said Superintendent Michael Hanson. "We know that a child who eats well, learns well."
Fresno Unified students heading to Duncan Polytechnical will be able to enroll in two brand new career pathways. They have a brand new physical and occupational therapy program. The school is also introducing a welding pathway where students can earn a credential that will help them get a job after high school. Fresno Unified officials say they realize there's more of a demand for career technical education. They're hoping to offer even more pathways over the next few years.
The Valley Air District has already issued a health caution for this week due to the bad air quality from the wildfires and high ozone due to all the heat. So if you are dropping off your kids, officials ask that you do not idle your car.
