Christmas came early for the children who witnessed a jailhouse shooting in Fresno County

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- Pure joy filled Toys-R-Us as siblings got a holiday shopping spree like no other. Personal shoppers in tow Joseph and his sisters got to pick all of their wish list items. Including a security detail from a galaxy far far away.

Mom Rachel Gaines was moved to tears by the love and support from the Fresno County Sheriff's Office.

"It's always not Today, you know, maybe another day. Put it back, you know, they always have to ask for everything and just to see them not have to ask is just beautiful."

It is hard to imagine just two months ago her children, ages three to seven, were at the Fresno County Jail when a parolee opened fire seriously injuring two correctional officers-- Juanita Davila and Toamalama Scanlan

Gaines was at work when she got the news.

"It's just the most terrifying feeling you can ever feel. Some of the questions they ask you don't have an answer for like "why?" That's such a simple question that you don't have an answer for."

"My hope is that this memory will overshadow the memory of that horrible day," said Margaret Mims, Fresno County Sheriff.

Though they got to pick some of the hottest items on store shelves their favorite gift was seeing officer Davila back in action.

Less than 12 weeks after being shot in the face officer Davila, accompanied the kids down the store isles.

"I wanted to let them know that I'm okay, I'm fine, you don't have to worry about me anymore and were just here for you as they need us."

Davila said she is thankful to be spending the holidays home with her loved ones, but continues to pray for her family member still in the hospital.

"My brother Scanlon who's still in the hospital were thinking of him we haven't forgot about him he's in our hearts and well always be there for him."

Mims said the day serves as part of the healing process as one of their own-- officer Scanlan-- remains in the hospital.

"It's more than a job, it's more than a career, it's a calling of service and they carry that above and beyond where they normally would have."
