An emotional ending to a several yearlong case-- Kalena Olson and Sergio Zamora listened as a Merced judge read out their fate.

The couple was charged in the death of two-year-old Hennesey Fagin, and also for abusing another child. They were sentenced to 13 years in prison Thursday after they pleaded no contest to their charges back in December of last year.

"Both defendants entered pleas to child abuse and causing great bodily injury or death to a child, as well as a second count of child abuse for the second child involved in this case," said Steven Slocum, Merced County District Attorney's Office.

Fagin died at the couple's home in Delhi in April of 2014. The two were arrested after a several month long investigation.

Court documents show that Zamoira went to check on Fagin and her older sister, when he notices the girl wasn't breathing-- He started to administer CPR. However, the report said the coroner found injuries on her body commonly found in abuse cases.

Zamora's mother, Paula, claims the EMT who responded wasn't well certified and still believes that her son is innocent.

"My son tried to save her-- he did the best he could to save the baby. I just say they're both innocent."

Olson's attorney Tom Pfeiff said both Olson and her family are heartbroken and that this is a horrible situation for the child lost, and the families left behind.

"It's always been her position that she was not responsible, or primarily responsible, for this. She regrets what happened to the child."

"We decided that these charges were appropriate," said Slocum.

Both Zamora and Olson will now be turned over to the California Department of Corrections.

Attorneys said because this was a negotiated plea deal, there will not be an appeal and the case is finally closed.
