FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- A 17-year-old who walked up to a car Friday morning just after seven was shot in the chest near Blackstone and Clinton.

"It does appear the suspect and victim have some sort of relationship. And it does appear that it's possibly gang related," said Sgt. Mike Palomino, Fresno Police Department.

An alert witness who saw what they believed was a hit and run, followed and took pictures of the suspect's car including the license plate. Across town near Highway 99 and Jensen officers tracked down the car-- and inside the alleged gunman.

"At one point he even asked the officers, 'how did you catch me so quick?' and so, I think he was even surprised," said Lt. Dave Madrigal, Fresno Police Department.

Under arrest is the driver-- Jesus Cardenas-- the teenage gunshot victim is expected to survive and detectives have already been talking to him at the hospital.

Unlike dozens of others this year this shooting will not become a homicide.

One week ago Fresno Police Chief Jerry Dyer stood in Southwest Fresno asking for gang members to put down their guns.

"The question we have to ask ourselves is, 'how much is enough?'"

Increasing rewards for gang members with guns is already paying off. A caller motivated by money, tipped off officers in Southwest Fresno earlier this week and two guns were found during a search warrant.

Officers hope $2,000 and $3,000 financial incentives will help in their mission to stop the violence.

The gun has been recovered in Friday morning's shooting-- so this is one case that's solved. But homicide detectives plan to work all weekend on the other cases that have not yet ended in arrests.
