New app allows users to customize insurance needs

Fresno, Calif. (KFSN) -- Dave Tokic is not just using his smartphone to take pictures of his prized possessions. A new app allows Dave to customize his insurance needs.

"I was just interested in kind of trying something new and using an app to see how I could get that done," said Tokic.

Instead of meeting in-person with an agent, Dave just opens the app, answers basic questions, and gets near instant insurance quotes on either a large item like his house or car.

He can also insure a la carte--- items like his electronics or cello. He even insured his cat named "Dude".

Dave says he and his wife have saved time and money.

"It came back with a quote that was 20 percent lower than what I was currently paying," said Tokic.

There are several on-demand apps. Some curate quotes from a range of insurance carriers and others deal with health or life insurance. Another one bases a rate on how often you drive. There are apps for things for ride or home sharing and even wedding or drone insurance.

Experts say today's insurance is about personalization and are especially appealing to tech-savvy millennials.

"Insurance is not a sexy product, but the easier insurance companies and these apps can make it the more likely younger people like millennials will be able to get the insurance protection they need," said Todd Erkis, insurance expert.
