Boy returns home following month-long hospital stay after deadly Christmas Day hit-and-run crash

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- It was a special and long-awaited homecoming for a ten-year-old Corcoran boy. Louis Romero, who loved ones call "kid," spent the last four weeks and four days in the hospital.

He was severely injured in a Christmas Day crash in Hanford that killed his uncle and injured his cousins.

We spoke with his aunt who says the family prayed every night for this moment.

"All we could do is cry with happiness because he has been through so much this month. We didn't think he was going to make it," Louis' aunt, Virginia Romero said.

Kid underwent four surgeries, one to stop the bleeding and swelling to his brain, another to repair a collapsed lung. Loved ones say he also had a feeding tube installed while on a ventilator.

"But by the grace of God, he is here still. So, we're pretty excited that... he's putting up a good fight," Romero said.

That fight could be seen as he was wheeled out of the hospital with stuffed animals in his lap and balloons attached to his chair.

But what happened after the ride home that shows the young boy's true strength. After getting out of the SUV with the help of his mom, little Louis took those steps to a new beginning and walked through his front door on his own two feet -- receiving a warm welcome by family members and his dog Bear.
