GUSTINE, Calif. (KFSN) -- Authorities are trying to calm fears in the North Valley after a principal was attacked on campus in front of students.

Police and administrators held a community meeting at Gustine Elementary School Monday afternoon. They told parents about additional security measures on campus since principal Ismael Munoz was attacked last Thursday.

Investigators say two men slashed his face with what's being described as a box cutter before getting away. Munoz had cosmetic surgery and is now recovering.

Meanwhile, Gustine Police Chief Doug Dunford is still hoping more witnesses will come forward.

"This happened in broad daylight, a bunch of people saw different things, and we're trying to piece all that together," he said. "And the more people we have come forward, it's going to make our job easier in trying to identify who did this because right now we're following up on about six different leads, and we're trying to narrow that down obviously."

An extra officer is now assigned to the campus, and the school is planning to increase the number of surveillance cameras over the next few weeks. The main gate is also staying closed throughout the day. Children are only being released directly to their parents.

However, authorities believe this attack specifically targeted Munoz.
