Apparent remains of baby found in Central Fresno canal
Fresno police are investigating a suspicious death after the remains of what appears to be a baby were found encased in cement in a canal on Wednesday.

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- Fresno police and the coroner's office are working to solve what could be a tragic mystery.

Investigators found what appears to be the remains of a baby -- encased in cement at the bottom of a dry canal. The discovery was made near Dakota and Cedar avenues in Central Fresno.

Police have been on the scene since 1 a.m. when they were alerted by two callers that a dead baby was in the canal. Remains of some sort were found and residents of the nearby Cambridge Court Apartments are being questioned.

Police investigators and deputy coroners were in and out of the apartment all day gathering and removing possible evidence both from the apartment and also from a vehicle. Neighbors said the woman who lived in the apartment was taken away for questioning by police.

"She's a nice professional lady, she works in an office. She has three kids, and she's a really good mom that I could see," said Jessica Conner, a neighbor. "No, I didn't notice if she was pregnant."

Neighbors said a male friend who was staying with her along with the neighbor in another apartment were also questioned, but police say they have no suspects and cannot say yet for certain if there is even an actual victim.

"We received information that a baby was in a canal in this area. Officers went out to this canal area, looked around, and didn't discover a baby," said Lt. Mark Salazar with the Fresno Police Department. "A second call came in stating they heard a baby was in the canal. They continued searching and what they did find is some sort of tissue that is decomposing."

Fresno County Coroner Dr. David Hadden told Action News that something that appeared to be human remains encased in cement was found in the canal. Investigators removed what appeared to be a bag of cement from an apartment at the scene. An autopsy on the remains is scheduled for Thursday.
