FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- Three people are safe after being rescued from the Kings River in Fresno County on Saturday.

It happened around 4:30 p.m. on the river near Trimmer Springs and Piedra roads, next to Winton Park.

Cal Fire officials say two men went in after a child who was struggling in the water. One of them helped get the child to safety, while the other became stranded on an island.

"The water is very fast, it is very cold. It was a safe location for them. The sheriff's department assisted with their boat in pulling them out," said Capt. Ryan Michaels with Cal Fire.

Once the three victims were safe, crews had to break away to Shaver Lake where a man drowned.
