DELHI, Calif. (KFSN) -- Authorities in the North Valley have arrested a mother and her boyfriend for the death of the woman's two-year-old daughter. Detectives say 22-year-old Kalena Olson and 24-year-old Sergio Zamora suffocated the toddler in April.

A home in Delhi is where investigators say two-year-old Hennessy Fagin was killed on April 21st. First responders rushed to the home, but she was already dead when deputies arrived. They suspected the toddler and her three-year-old sister were both abused -- but only recently received the final autopsy report.

"The doctor has deemed that the child was deprived of oxygen to her brain, basically the child was suffocated," said Deputy Delray Shelton, Merced County Sheriff's Office.

The toddler's mother, Kalena Olson, was arrested on child abuse charges in the days after her daughter's death, but was later released from jail. Her landlord said the family only lived here for a short time, and moved out after the incident. In the months since then, the major crimes unit continued its investigation. On Saturday, detectives got help from police in Turlock where they tracked down Olson and her boyfriend Sergio Angel Zamora.

Deputy Delray Shelton said Zamora tried to run, but officers quickly caught him. The couple was then booked into the Stanislaus County Jail. Both suspects will be transferred back to Merced County and will be held for felony child abuse charges and homicide.

Deputies say Olson's three-year-old daughter suffered injuries that were similar to her younger sister's, but she has since recovered and is now in the care of Child Protective Services.
