Fresno Council Member teaming up with neighbors in an effort to fight back against suspected burglar

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- Councilmember Luis Chavez's welcome home from vacation-- shattered glass and the description of a suspect.

"In the back of my mind I thought this guy might come back."

Last Wednesday, Chavez said his neighbor watched as a tattooed man stole a handful of items through that broken window. Then Sunday, Chavez said he was back for more.

"I see a man peeping through my windows and right away I recognize a very distinctive tattoo that he has."

Chavez grabbed a gun and as the suspect came back to that same window they stood face to face.

"He runs and so we're off to the races and so we're chasing him through alleys-- Backyards."

Chavez said with help from a neighbor and police he caught up with the man identified as Enrique Lopez. A man Chavez said is well known in the area and now other people are coming forward saying they too have seen that man in their cameras.

"We've had some folks that have called and said this is the same guy-- we've got him on tape from our surveillance, and he just had quite a long rap sheet of incidents in this neighborhood," said Chavez.

Chavez said at least one local business has come forward saying they have been targeted by Lopez. And a man from an apartment complex just down the street said he caught him on video too.

When we showed Chavez the clip he once again recognized Lopez's tattoo.

"I suspect because so many people have come forward with additional incidents he's going to have more charges-- and he should."

For now Lopez is in jail for one count of first degree burglary.
