FRESNO, Calif, (KFSN) -- An officer says he was forced to kill a dog in Southeast Fresno Sunday after being attacked by four pit bulls.

The officer originally responded to a home on Iowa near Cedar and Tulare Avenues for reports of vicious dogs in the area. When he arrived, one of the owners said the dogs were fighting in her backyard.

The officer first tried separating the dogs with a less-than-lethal shotgun blast before the dogs came after him.

That's when he fired twice, killing one of the dogs and scaring the others to get away. The SPCA was called in to later capture the three other dogs.

The owner was cited for having unlicensed dogs and having them run loose.
