LOS BANOS, Calif. (KFSN) -- A Los Banos teacher and his girlfriend appeared in court after police said they had sexual relationships with underage students. We're learning new details about the charges the couple is facing.

Gary Bettencourt is out on bail after police arrested him last Wednesday. Investigators said he had sexual relationships with students while teaching at lOs Banos and Pacheco High Schools. "There are 13 counts filed. This takes place over a number of years, and there are three separate confidential victims listed," said Travis Colby, Merced County Deputy DA.

Court documents claim the first encounter happened in 2003 with a 15-year-old girl. The next involved a victim under the age of 18 in 2006, and the most recent case happened last year with a 17-year-old student.

Devyn Egan is named in six of the counts from 2015. Authorities said she was also Bettencourt's student before becoming his girlfriend. During the hearing, the judge approved a request to have the 22-year-old released on electronic monitoring, and both defendants entered not guilty pleas to all of the charges. "The court has issued a limiting order that prohibits me from discussing the facts in this matter, primarily for the protection of the victims, and I have to adhere to that so I can't comment on specifics of the facts of the case other than what's in the complaint," said Colby.

Moments after our interview, one of Egan's family members was involved in a verbal altercation with relatives of one alleged victim, but it was broken up by a deputy.

She and Bettencourt are scheduled to be back in court next month.
