Man accused of DUI, leading authorities on chase in Merced County

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- A man was booked into jail after being accused of driving drunk and leading officers on a high-speed chase in Merced County.

The pursuit started on Highway 152 and Willis Road in the Los Banos area around 7 p.m. Saturday. Officers say they caught the driver going 105 miles per hour and tried to stop him, but he kept going.

They notified Merced police, who put a spike strip on Highway 59 near Childs Avenue. That flattened both front tires and forced the car to stop about a mile away on 18th Street.

Officers arrested Jose Vargas, 25, of San Jose for felony evading and DUI.
