FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- A murder suspect was caught after escaping from Fresno police custody Sunday night.

Sections of the Mariposa Mall in Downtown Fresno were scoured by police as the man wanted for murder ran from officers and K9s. As a result, parts of downtown were shut down for about 20 minutes.

Gustavo Adolfo Duenas, 20, was found hiding in a bush near P and Inyo streets 20 minutes after escaping from police custody. He was being transported from Fresno police headquarters to the Fresno County Jail -- just a block away -- when he ran off, police said.

"As he was trying to secure him inside our van, the suspect bolted from the officer and he fled down here on the Mariposa Mall," said Fresno Police Lt. Phil Cooley.

According to the Fresno County Jail website, Duenas is being held on two charges of murder, robbery, being a gang member and now escaping from jail and police custody.

"Once the officers located him, he gave up," said Cooley.

Police weren't able to confirm which murder case Duenas has been charged with.
