New details about suspects accused of shooting an Edison High School teacher

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- New details revealed Tuesday in the shooting of an Edison High School teacher in 2013. The suspects told officers the crime was a spur of the moment decision they made right before the attack.

The teacher survived the violent confrontation and gave detectives a detailed account of what happened.

For the first time, officers revealed Jaime Gonzalez is the one they believe came face-to-face with an Edison High Teacher and shot him three times.

"The two of them struggled to get the gun. During the struggle, the individual that had the gun got a hold of it and he stated that it went off several times," said Mike Martinez, Fresno Police Officer.

The officer who interviewed the teacher at the hospital described what Steven Guerrero told him happened and how he refused to give up even after being hit in the head by a weight.

"Apparently recomposed himself and swung at the first individual that had the handgun, knocking the gun loose," said Martinez.

Tuesday several officers testified about the crime scene and what they were told moments after showing up to the school to find a teacher shot, and a janitor very shaken up.

"He remembers being very afraid for his life, thinking that the suspects, armed with guns, were going to kill them. He remembers moving behind victim Guerrero and then went and hid in an adjacent room," said David Ponek, Fresno Police Officer.

At least one suspect told officers the attack and shooting wasn't anything the group planned in advance.

"He stated that they walked through the Edison High campus to go to a friends house. One of his friends saw the door was open. His friends went inside that classroom, but Jose remained outside," said Sgt. Justin Hoagland, Fresno Police Department.

Officers said at least one suspect tried to take a laptop during the confrontation, and robbery was the motive.

Detectives said all four belong to a gang.

All of the suspects are being tried as adults and could face life in prison.

As for the teacher, he has recovered and is back teaching at Edison High School.

The preliminary hearing continues Wednesday.
