Police chase ends when suspect jumps car over a ponding basin

FRESNO, Calif. -- Detectives are trying to figure out if the driver that crashed after a police chase is the suspect in a robbery.

Police started chasing the car because it matched the description of a getaway car from an armed robbery earlier in the night at Palm Avenue and Shields Avenue. After chasing the car for a few minutes, police say, the driver jumped his car across a ponding basing near Weber Avenue and Brawley Avenue.

The suspect is now in the hospital in critical condition, but police believe he will survive. Detectives are now looking at surveillance video from the robbery to see if the man is the suspect.

His name has not been released.
