Suspect arrested in Kearney Market shooting in Fresno

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- A murder suspect is in jail after police found him 118 miles away from the store where he is accused of shooting and killing Anthony Jones. Eric Gallardo, 23, of Fresno, is accused of getting into a fight before police said he followed the victim into Kearney Market and fired several shots.

The homicide happened just inside the doorway of the mini mart and several cameras were rolling. Police said the video shows exactly what happened during the deadly fight.

Fresno police now have a motive for the murder of Jones. This, after a lengthy interview with Gallardo after officers caught up with him at a Stockton gas station Monday afternoon. "He believed that he had been slighted by the victim. He believed that the victim had done something to offend a family member and he felt empowered to take action against that," explained Lt.Burke Farrah, Fresno Police Department.

Bullet holes are still in the doorway, soda machine, and potato chip rack at the store where detectives said Gallardo started an argument, then a fist fight, before a gun was taken out. "The suspect was the only one who was armed. It was completely, 100-percent unjustified. There was no reason to believe our victim was a threat to our suspect and that's why it was pretty easy to make this case," said Farrah.

Jones is described by loved ones as a father who enjoyed cooking, cleaning, and walking his little girl to school. His 6-year-old has been asking for her dad since the murder.

Relief has come with the arrest of Gallardo and the fact investigators have witnesses and even better, clear surveillance video of what happened. "I'm told by our detectives the video offers very clear and convincing evidence that Mr. Gallardo is responsible for the murder of Mr. Jones," said Farrah.

Police do not believe the suspect and victim knew each other before this fight.

Tuesday, detectives said the suspect was still driving the very distinguishable red Camaro he is believed sped away from the crime scene in.
