VISALIA, Calif. (KFSN) -- The City of Visalia is working on plans for the Greenway Trail. It will run from St. Johns Parkway to Southern California Edison's Rector Station just South of Whitendale Avenue.

"The trail system is primarily to get people off the streets," said City of Visalia Senior Civil Engineer Vaughn Melcher.

Melcher says they hope trails will reduce pollution and ultimately give people access to walk a loop around the entire city.

"There's about 40 miles of trail systems that's planned for the entire city," Melcher said.

Melcher says 99% of people are in favor of more trails. He says the other 1% don't use the trails so they don't feel they're necessary.

Construction will only begin after the City has funding. Melcher says they may build it in mile-long sections with three sections total. They'll be applying for Federal and State Grants and using money from Measure R.

"It could be within the next year, it could be within the next five years," Melcher said.

The Greenway Trail could cost $3 million dollars.
