FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- Community members react after suspect attempts to kidnap two women less than a mile apart.

Pam Armstrong is a tough woman. "I needed to learn how to defend myself and my loved ones," said Armstrong.

Armstrong vowed to never be a victim and opened a self-defense and fitness studio to help others. She did it because someone once made her fear for her life.

"Do we need to wait for a threat to learn. No, God forbid. We need to learn as much as we can before we get attacked," said Armstrong of the Fresno Vanguard Krav Maga & Fitness. Simple techniques, she said, can save you from danger.

The class prepares you for the worst. Like the terrifying incident in the Tower District Monday. Police said a suspect attempted to lure a woman into his van. When he failed, he drove to another spot and tried an attack on someone else.

"It's very unusual. What comes to mind is drugs. That this guy was on drugs," said Lt. Joe Gomez of the Fresno Police Department.

Both victims were able to fight the suspect off and call for help. Police are still searching for the man, as tower district neighbors show their support..

"A woman will do what she has to do to survive," said Tower District resident Sallie Maggard.

Staying safe anywhere, for some is no longer a luxury. Here, self-protection is the key to comfort.

The man is described as a tall and stocky suspect who drives a dark red Dodge van.
