Keeping your pets safe during the heat wave
The intense heat is not only uncomfortable for us, but can be dangerous and deadly for our animals.

FRESNO, Calif (KFSN) -- The intense heat is not only uncomfortable for us, but can be dangerous and deadly for our animals.

The Pet ER in Fresno has received a dozen reports of pets that died from the heat in the last two weeks.

Veterinarians say people need to keep animals in a cool, shaded environment and provide them plenty of water.

The most serious danger comes from the hot sun and your car. Action News came across this dog inside a car with the windows up. And in Clovis, officers were called by bystanders to help a small dog trapped inside. The owner was shopping inside and got a warning from officers.

During this heat, Fresno police officers keep a close eye on their own canines, who are also working. They constantly refill water for the dogs and keep their quarters air conditioned to about 70 degrees.
