Criminal Charges dropped against General Vang Pao

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) On Friday, U.S. Attorney Lawrence Brown announced a superseding indictment that drops charges against 79-year-old Vang Pao. The grand jury returned its decision on Thursday.

Pao and 10 others, including a retired Army lieutenant colonel, were charged in 2007 in the alleged plot. Pao is a former Laotian general who assisted American troops during the Vietnam War and is considered a hero by Hmong refugees living in the U.S.

Hundreds of supporters have rallied in his defense outside the federal courthouse in Sacramento during each of his court appearances.

The new indictment retains the charges against the 10 others and adds two more defendants.
