Auberry, Sierra Elementary close doors for good

FRESNO, Calif.

Auberry Elementary And Sierra Elementary in Tollhouse have been open for 100 years.

Because of declining enrollment, the district was forced to cut $9 million from its budget. The district also cut the superintendent's position to save money.

Parents say they are sad to see the schools shut down.

Stephanie Saar said, "It's very sad up here. I mean I don't know where you can have a school like this nestled in the mountains. It's beautiful. And I think it's devastating. A lot of the community members feel the same way. It's sad, very, very sad day.

Less than 400 students attend Auberry and Sierra Elementary. In the fall, they will all go to foothill middle school.
