After months of construction, Dick's Sporting Goods officially opened its doors Wednesday morning for the first time. It was also a significant opening because Dick's is the first store to open to customers in the Clovis Crossing Regional Shopping Center.
Dick's Sporting Goods Marketing Manager Billy Burkhalter told Action News, "We're extremely excited to be here and to serve those sports enthusiasts in the community."
The store hired more than 40 employees to work in departments from running to cycling.
Burkhalter added, "We have a store within a store concept so you can walk in and you can go to our the golf department and we have a PGA Pro on staff to help suit your needs."
Billy Burkhalter says the company was attracted to the shopping center because of the sports enthusiasm and the growth in the city of Clovis.
Dick's isn't the only company moving into the Clovis market. Construction is underway on a Walmart Supercenter and several other stores including Petco and Home Goods.
Clovis City Councilman Bob Whalen said, "It's been a long time coming that we've been wanting to get some business here at this area that'd been designated for retail."
Whalen says the development's location will attract residents across the area.
"We're looking forward to the amount of enthusiasm generated by this place, the amount of dollars created here, the jobs that will be created here and the tax revenues will come to the city," Whalen said.
When it is complete, the center is expected to generate at least a million dollars in tax revenue per year.
Construction crews continue to make good progress on the Clovis Crossing Shopping Center. I'm told the Walmart Supercenter could open by the holiday season.
The official grand opening for Dick's is Friday, September 7, at 8 am. On Saturday, former San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Dwight Clark will be at the store from 1pm to 3pm. Sunday former Oakland Raiders wide receiver Fred Biletnikoff will be at the store from 1pm to 3pm.
Two other stores that will go into the new shopping center are Maurices clothing store and ULTA cosmetics.
