The armed man has been identified as 26-year-old Nikolas Frazier of Clovis.

CLOVIS, Calif. (KFSN) -- For nearly 12 hours, a Clovis Walmart parking lot shut down as detectives investigated a shooting between officers and an armed man.

That shooting happened just after 1:30 Sunday morning.

"They encountered a male that appeared to have a rifle in the parking lot," says Clovis Police Lt. Jim Munro.

The armed man has been identified as 26-year-old Nikolas Frazier of Clovis.

Munro says officers tried to make contact with him.

Because of the ongoing investigation, Munro says they're only releasing very little information right now.

"I can say that there was an action that took place that obviously caused officers to fire their weapons," he said.

Munro says several officers fired their weapons. At this point, it's unclear if Frazier fired back.

Frazier was shot and taken to the hospital, where he died.

Action News reached out to Frazier's father, who said this came out of the blue.

He explained that his son has lived with him since his wife died in 2003 and to his knowledge, Frazier did not own a firearm.

He said his son didn't suffer from mental illness.

He had just been hired at the Fresno Amazon fulfillment center two days ago.

Two bullets hit a nail salon and one of them shattered their door and hit their TV.

Sunday afternoon, Robert Stanberry worked to replace it.

"It is pretty sad to see that happen, with all the violence happening," he said.

This shooting marks the first officer-involved shooting in the city of Clovis this year. The last time one that happened here was in 2016.

Munro says the investigation into this one could go on for several months to years.

Police officers tell us they will be releasing more information on Tuesday during a press conference.

The officers involved in the shooting have been placed on paid administrative leave.
