Body discovered by firefighters while battling blaze in Merced, CHP investigating as homicide

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- A fire and death investigation in Merced is now being considered a homicide by authorities.

Last Thursday, officials say a man's body was found while crews were putting out a fire at a homeless encampment near Highway 99 and R Street.

On Wednesday night, California Highway Patrol officers tell Action News they believe someone is responsible for his death.

Authorities are asking any witnesses to come forward.

The victim has not yet been identified.
