Fresno, Kings County's COVID vaccine shipments delayed by nation's cold weather

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- As winter storms continue to impact parts of the country, it is also impacting the supply of the COVID-19 vaccine in Central California.

Kings County and Fresno County announced on Thursday the severe weather has caused shipping delays for the expected doses.

The Kings County health department said it has very limited supplies of the vaccine, which are intended for necessary second doses. It is suspending plans for vaccine clinics until additional supplies arrive.

The county's vaccine distribution was also being impacted by glitches in the MyTurn platform for scheduling COVID-19 vaccine appointments.

"The combination of these two separate and unfortunate situations has forced the Public Health Department to halt plans for vaccination clinics for the near future," said Nichole Fisher, Nursing Division Manager for the Kings County Department of Public Health.

Ealier in the day, Joe Prado with the Fresno County Department of Public Health said the county had not yet received 7,800 Moderna vaccines that were scheduled to arrive.

Those doses were set to go to multiple locations throughout the county.

Prado added there isn't a timetable on when Fresno County will receive the vaccines.

The county is working with local medical providers to give them doses they were holding for a contingency like this to avoid appointment cancellations.
