Manhunt continues for escaped prisoner in Elgin
Jesse Vega, also known as Jesse Ortiz, escaped custody in Elgin while being transported to a court appearance.

ELGIN, Ill. -- A manhunt is underway for Jesse Vega - also known as Jesse Ortiz - a prisoner who escaped custody of Elgin Mental Health Center officials said Wednesday morning.

Vega, 33, is described as a Hispanic male, 5' 8" and 160 pounds with tattoos on both arms. The Chicago man was last seen wearing a blue shirt, blue jeans, white shoes and handcuffs.

Elgin police warn the public not to engage the escapee if they see someone who fits his description, but to call 911 immediately and give them the location instead. They will take it from there.

"Just use caution," Elgin Police Department Commander Anna Lalley said. "At this point we don't know why he escaped, we don't know what his intent is. Just use caution and call 911."

Vega, who is also wanted on a federal warrant, was being transported to a scheduled court appearance when he broke free. He exited the vehicle when it paused at a stop sign at Seneca Street and Dundee Avenue.

Police received the call around 8 a.m. Wednesday. Automated calls were made to nearby residents and a local boys and girls club went on lockdown.

Several agencies responded and set up a command center. A number of vehicles and armed officers are looking for Vega in the surrounding residential area. Authorities said there are no weapons missing at this point.
