FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- A 3-year-old has died from their injuries after the Kia Optima they were riding in crashed into a blacked-out Toyota Camry on Highway 41 early Sunday morning, officers say.

The Fresno County Coroner's Office confirmed the 3-year-old's identity as Kendrixx Leavell of Hanford.

The California Highway Patrol received reports of a Toyota that stopped in the middle lane of southbound Highway 41, north of Highway 180.

The driver of the Toyota has been identified as 31-year-old Carlos Sandoval Jr. of Selma

As the disabled vehicle remained on the highway, a 33-year-old woman driving a Kia crashed into the back of Sandoval's car.

Leavell was wearing a seatbelt but was not secured in a child safety seat.

The 3-year-old suffered major, life-threatening injuries and was rushed to the hospital, where he died days later on May 20.

A man who was a passenger in the Kia was also hospitalized with major injuries.

Sandoval was taken to the hospital, where he died.

Officers say Sandoval may have been under the influence of alcohol and are waiting for the results of a toxicology report.

The crash remains under investigation.
