7-year-old dies after drowning at Southeast Fresno apartment complex, officials say

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- A 7-year-old boy has died after police and fire crews responded Thursday afternoon to a drowning at an apartment complex in Southeast Fresno, officials say.

Authorities were called to the Summer Park Apartments at Butler and Winery Avenues around 4:20 p.m. When officers arrived, police said they found the child who had been pulled from the complex swimming pool.

Authorities began CPR and the child was taken to Community Regional Medical Center, where he later died.

Police say that around 10 to 15 children were in the pool and several adults were in the area at the time of the drowning.

It is unknown how long the child had been unconscious and underwater.

Officials believe no foul play was involved in the child's drowning.

Investigators will review surveillance video from the complex to learn more information about the moments that led to the drowning.

Neighbors say the complex opened the pool as recently as last week, when Fresno's heat reached triple digits.

The Fresno Police Department asks that parents and adults remain vigilant and supervise children in and around pools and other bodies of water.
