A vegetation fire in Merced County spread to debris in a Winton neighborhood Wednesday afternoon, prompting a response from firefighters and law enforcement.

MERCED COUNTY, Calif. (KFSN) -- A vegetation fire in Merced County spread to debris in a Winton neighborhood Wednesday afternoon, prompting a response from firefighters and law enforcement.

The fire started shortly after 3 p.m. near Toluca Avenue and Chestnut Lane.

Fire officials have not indicated how many acres have burned or whether any homes are threatened.

Video Action News received showed a large plume of thick black smoke rising from the fire, along with visible flames.

Law enforcement officers were called to the area to assist with traffic control. Drivers heading into the Winton area were advised to slow down and follow all detours.

Officials also reported downed power lines in the area and urged the public to use extreme caution.
