FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- Over 3,000 students walked through the doors of the Fresno Convention Center on Wednesday morning, where more than 50 colleges, universities, trade schools, military options, and informational booths were ready to help.
Students networked and attended informative seminars.
"I walked into the rooms of the seminars, wall to wall. Standing room only. Eyes bright," said Dr. Theresa Price with the National College Resource Foundation.
The expo focused on Latino Students, one of the largest demographics in the Central Valley.
"Even though we are the largest population in the country, we are still low on numbers in receiving 4-year degrees and so it's very critical that our students are aware of these types of opportunities," said Dr. Gloria Ponce Rodriguez, board member of the National College Resource Foundation.
It's the second year Fresno Unified partners with the National College Resource Foundation.
Nancy Witrado says that as a First-Generation Latina, she understands firsthand the power of providing these spaces.
"Our valley kids specifically are incredible, and it gives us the opportunity to help shape them to be the adult they want to be and the adult we want in our community.," said Nancy Witrado.
Three Duncan Polytechnical High School seniors stopped at several booths, helping them narrow down their top universities.
For Adelina Avendano, her dream is to become a veterinarian and hopes to make her parents proud.
She says this expo felt encouraging.
"My family comes from Mexico, and being here with people who are like me helps me feel comfortable, you feel welcome and invited to explore your options," said Adelina Avendano.
Dr. Price emphasized that all students were invited to the event and shared a few words of encouragement for students who could not make it.
"I want people to know that regardless of your background, regardless of where you are from, you and do an be anything and this event is an underlying testament to that."
