FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- Fresno police are searching for the driver of a white sedan after investigators say a man was intentionally struck, carried on the vehicle's roof and left critically injured in a dramatic hit-and-run caught on surveillance video.

The incident happened around 2:30 a.m. Monday near Abby Street and Belmont Avenue in central Fresno.

"We quickly established that this was not an accident. In fact, it appears to be an intentional act in which the driver targeted this pedestrian. We still don't know the reason why," a Fresno Police Department spokesperson said.

Security footage obtained from a nearby business captured the moments leading up to the collision.

The video shows a man wearing a black shirt and shorts approaching a white car as it exited a parking lot. The man appeared to speak with the driver before the vehicle drove away. He then followed the car, waving his arms and running after it.

About 20 seconds later, the same vehicle returned.

As the man ran toward the approaching car, the driver swerved onto North Abby Street and began traveling the wrong direction before heading directly toward him.

Police say the vehicle struck the man, launching him onto the roof of the sedan.

Surveillance video shows the driver continuing down the roadway with the victim clinging to the vehicle before he was eventually thrown from the roof.

One witness can be seen reacting in shock as the scene unfolded.

"The individual who was struck by the vehicle is a male in his 30s. He is in critical and unstable condition at the hospital," police said.

Investigators said the victim was thrown from the vehicle several hundred feet from the initial impact. He landed in the roadway and narrowly avoided being struck by another passing vehicle.

Several bystanders rushed to help, surrounding the victim and providing assistance until first responders arrived.

The man was transported to a local hospital, where he remains in critical condition.

Police have not identified the suspect and are continuing to search for the driver of the white sedan. Investigators have not said what led to the confrontation between the victim and the driver.

Anyone with information about the incident is urged to contact the Fresno Police Department.
