FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- A local family is inviting the community to support a cause close to their hearts as they host the third annual lemonade stand in honor of their late son, raising money for childhood cancer research.
"This is a really great opportunity to come out, have a cup of lemonade, but also raise money for a good cause," said Daniel Rodriguez, Henry's father.
All proceeds from the event benefit Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation, which funds pediatric cancer research and provides support to families. For parents Taylor Abels and Daniel Rodriguez, the mission is deeply personal.
The fundraiser honors their son, Henry John Ables Rodriguez, who was diagnosed with brain cancer in 2022, just two weeks after his first birthday. During his illness, he experienced multiple strokes and a brain bleed.
"Henry was just the coolest, funniest, spunky little guy and fought brain cancer for two years and passed away in September of 2024," said Abels.
Rodriguez said his son left a lasting impact.
"He changed a lot of lives in his short time here," he said. "He really did."
Through their annual lemonade stand and other fundraising efforts, the family hopes to help advance research and move closer to a cure.
"Losing a child is really the worst possible thing, and being intentional with how we do this and making sure that the event feels like him and just reflects his legacy of love and community," Abels said.
Over the past three years, the family has raised about $84,000 for the foundation. This year, they aim to reach a milestone.
"This year, between the two fundraisers that we do, is to get to $100,000, which would be huge for us," Abels said. "I know we can do it because our community is incredible and rallies behind us, which we're so thankful for."
The event is supported entirely through community donations, from cups and baked goods to the lemonade itself. A Raising Cane's location will donate the lemonade, and a local taco truck will also contribute.
"We also have a taco truck that's going to be coming that will share some of its proceeds. Madre's tacos," Rodriguez said.
Despite the serious cause, the family says the event is a joyful one that brings people together.
"It's always just a very happy time, even though we're raising money for a cause that is scary for families and an honor and all of that in honor of our son, where we do this. It's a lot of fun," Rodriguez said.
Henry's lemonade stand is scheduled for Sunday, June 28, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the family's home near the Tower District at 660 E Floradora Ave, Fresno, CA 93728.
Those unable to attend can donate online.
